Pharoah Sanders passed away peacefully surrounded by loved ones at his Los Angeles home this morning.
His style was beautiful, grating, adventurous, spiritual and always fascinating. He was born Farrell Sanders in Little Rock, Arkansas and began a collaboration as a young man with Sun Ra who gave him the name Pharoah. He played with John Coltrane until Coltrane’s passing in 1967. As a bandleader he was a founder of the spiritual jazz scene and had prolific career through the 90’s. He came back into prominence a couple years ago with his excellent collaboration with electronic artist Floating Points ending his career on a very high note.
Pharoah was 81 years of age. RIP 😥
